June 30, 2007. Look for Peggy Smith Duke's essay "Christian Living: Not a One-Woman Show in the July/August issue of Christian Woman magazine.
April 24, 2007. Peggy Smith Duke poem "Jet Cars" has been accepted for publication in Subtropics. "Suffrage" has been accepted for publication in "Just Bite Me: Satire, Whimsy and Other Tasty Treats," an anthology scheduled for release in May, 2007.
April 15, 2007. At the Nashville Public Library, poets in the round moderated by River Jordan featured poets Alvin Knox, Deanna Vaughn, Peggy Smith Duke, and Tom Kimmel.
March 12, 2007. The editors have accepted a Peggy Smith Duke poem "Strike" from the Being at Work Poetry Challenge for publication in the Minnesota Review. The poetry challenge was supported by United Steelworkers, the Canadian Autoworkers and the Communication, Energy and Paperworkers.
January 23, 2007. Fall and winter publications including Peggy Smith Duke poems have made this a year of progress. "Gravitas" is in the Birmingham Arts Journal (PDF is available for the entire issue). "Maupin" appears in Southern Hum, an online journal, along with the work of two of my close writing colleagues Kory Wells and Connie Foster. "Mourning" appears in Relief: A Quarterly Christian Expression, Vol. 1 Issue 1, Fall, 2006. "Executive Privilege" appears in Main Street Rag, Vol. 11, No. 4, Winter 2006/2007.
January 11, 2007. LivingWork in Canada announced the top five in their Being at Work Poetry Challenge supported by the United Steelworkers, Canadian Autoworkers, and Communication, Energy, & Paperworkers. Peggy Smith Duke's poem "Strike" was in the top five in the Emerging Poets category.
November 3, 2006. Literary e-zine Southern Hum will include Peggy Smith Duke's poem, "Maupin," in their December issue.
November 1, 2006. Look for Peggy Smith Duke's poem, "Gravitas," a poem written in homage to sporstman drag racing, in the January 2007 issue of Birmingham Arts Journal.
September 7, 2006. A Peggy Smith Duke poem, "Mourning," will appear in Relief: A Quarterly Christian Expression published by ccPublishing, NFP in Chicago. "Mississippi Promises" will appear in The River: The Natchez Poetry Anthology sponsored by the Natchez Downtown Development Association and Copiah-Lincoln Community College. The anthology will be available in early December and can be purchased for $15 (includes postage and handling) through Judy Wiggins, Humanities Coordinator, Copiah-Lincoln Community College, 11 Co-Lin Circle, Natchez, MS 29120.
August 23, 2006. Peggy Smith Duke's poem "Quantum Metaphysics" has been accepted for publication in the Magazine of Speculative Poetry, tentatively, for Spring 2007.
June 15, 2006. The second issue of Subtropics, a literary journal published by the MFA Program at the University of Florida, is in bookstores and available through their website. Peggy Smith Duke's poem, "Hen Party" has been published in this issue, thanks to Poetry Editor Sidney Wade. Subtropics #2 can be purchased at http://www.atomicbooks.com/products/-/12465.html.
January 10, 2006. The winter issue of The Tennessee Writer included an article by Peggy Smith Duke on her fall 2005 attendance at the Southern Women Writers Conference at Berry College. There, she attended a workshop conducted by poet Sidney Wade and participated in a public reading at a Rome, Georgia downtown restaurant. Sidney Wade has accepted one of Peggy's poems, "Hen Party" for inclusion in the new journal, Subtropics. published out of the University of Florida.
September 21, 2005. New Verse News posted a Peggy Smith Duke poem, "Watching a Man Whose Son Has Gone to War" today.
August 8, 2005: Peggy Smith Duke's poem "Calibration" received Honorable Mention in the Writer's Workshop 2005 Poetry Contest. "There were well over 100 entries submitted and yours was considered outstanding," wrote Karen Ackerson, President. "Your poetry is quite good."
July 30, 2005: New Verse News, a journal of poetry on current issues and events, posted a Peggy Smith Duke poem Saturday, July 30. "Thanks for the moving and sadly truthful "Shot Dead," wrote editor James Penha.
July 17, 2005: Peggy Smith Duke received a Citation Award for “Shirt Factory” from the Montgomery Branch of the National League of American Pen Women in their 2005 Poetry Contest.
In addition, three of Dr. Duke’s poems were accepted for upcoming issues of the online journal Muscadine Lines: A Southern Journal . “Cricket Music” and “Zucchini” will appear in Vol. 5, Sept/Oct, 2005. “Up on the Highway” will appear in Vol. 6, Nov/Dec, 2005.
Peggy Smith Duke’s article “It doesn’t have to rhyme, but it does have to have a reason” appeared in the Summer 2005 issue of Tennessee Writers’ Alliance . The Tennessee Writer and included her poem “Cows.”
Peggy Smith Duke is a poet and writer living in rural Middle Tennessee, USA, with her husband, two, three cats and a disagreeable horse. During racing season, "Dr. Dial-In" serves as crew chief for her husband’s competitive sportsman drag racing.
A retired human resources professional in aircraft and appliance manufacturing, she has published in newspapers, professional journals and magazines for 30 years. Her poetry has been published in The Trunk (2003, 2004) and John Reid’s Traveling: An Anthology of Award-Winning Poetry (2005) and she is three times a poetry winner in the Middle Tennessee State University Writer’s Loft Fiction and Poetry Competition.
She holds a BS in Journalism and an MA in Industrial Psychology, from Middle Tennessee State University; and an EdD from Vanderbilt University. In 2004 she completed a writing certificate from Writer’s Loft with a focus in poetry.
